Tutoring Works

Evidence shows that tutoring done well changes students' lives.

When tutoring partners participate in independent evaluations of their tutoring interventions, the evidence shows that tutoring has impact. Some recent examples:

  • A study by Wilder Research of the East Side Learning Center shows that over 70% of all student participants gained in reading comprehension at John A Johnson and Bruce Vento Elementary schools (2008).
  • Students who were in the Experience Corps tutoring program over a one year period made dramatic improvements (60%) in their reading skills compared to students who were not in the program, especially in the areas of reading comprehension and sounding out new words (Washington University in St. Louis, 2008).
  • Minnesota Reading Corps data shows participants exceeded a rate of one year’s growth in one year’s time and made significant gains in Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) tests after one year of intervention (January 2009). MRC students were given less than a 75% chance of meeting the grade standards in reading as measured by the MCA. Eighty percent of those participating children who successfully exited from the MRC program met or exceeded state standards in reading. (2008)

The Case for Tutoring Interventions

The Morning Foundation makes a strong case for tutoring by showing the return on investment for both a high school and college degree. Tom Holman, director of the Morning Foundation and chair of the Board of Directors of the Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation, has conducted an analysis of the economic impact of increased educational attainment and the financial benefit that educational programs such as tutoring provide to individuals and to society.
